In a nod to all the Star Wars geeks out there - May the 4th be with you! If you get it, you get it.
It's another sea day today. We started with bridge and continued lessons about opening with weak 2s. We were back to our middling ways with trivia today, finishing just out of the points. The close ones:
- What does a meteor have to do to become a meteorite?
- Strike a planet's surface (we thought it was entering the atmosphere)
- What is the name of the blue muppet on Sesame Street that was always doing stunts?
- We thought Grover, but it was Gonzo
- How many members were there in the original Rat Pack?
- We thought there were four (Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr., Joey Bishop) but forgot Peter Lawford, so the answer was five
- What Marilyn Monroe movie was released without being completed?
- Something's Got to Give
- What chocolate or candy used the slogan, Do you eat the red ones last?
- Smarties - but not the Smarties most Americans are familiar with - these are a candy-coated chocolate similar to M&Ms and are produced by Nestle and available in the UK and Canada
- Tiebreakers were needed:
- 1) The movie Dirty Dancing was set in what year?
- 1963
- 2) How many events were in the first Olympics of the modern era?
- 43 events in Athens, Greece, 1896
This was an all-inside day as the temperature hovered in the upper 50s and it was windy enough that they had deck #2 (the promenade deck) closed. That put a dent in some folks' plans as there are a couple of big events happening tomorrow (Thursday) and also on Saturday. Viking put together a Viking Star Marathon event. Actually, it's a half-marathon. Participants have their choice of walking or running for 5K, 10K, or 21K - a half marathon. The walkers go Thursday morning and the runners Saturday morning. Arlona and I will both be walking the 5K. Unfortunately, that means a 7AM start tomorrow morning. 5K is 13.5 laps around deck #2. We're hoping it warms up a bit (it won't) and the wind dies down (or the Captain turns the ship with the wind and matches speed for the duration of the walk). Stay tuned for tomorrow's blog for the outcome.
Chef Thomas and the culinary team put together a German/Bavarian-themed lunch for us today. It featured large pretzels, multiple types of sausages, suckling pig, sauerkraut, spätzle, and more. We enjoyed it.
Arlona's art project this afternoon featured a lighthouse on a cliff. The main focus of the project was to develop techniques for reflections and shadows.

Arlona's artistic interpretation - another outstanding piece |
Looking out at the ocean can be an interesting pastime. You never know what you'll see. For example, we're near a shipping lane so I saw these two rather large commercial ships off toward the horizon.
Ahh, the mysteries of the ocean.
We enjoyed a nice dinner in the World Cafe with friends. Arlona thought the Chocolate Dome dessert was especially photogenic.
Since we're headed northerly, we were able to catch a nice sunset from our balcony.
The sky immediately around the sun looked like it was on fire |
The aftermath was beautiful as well |
Tomorrow will be a busy sea day before we arrive in Portsmouth, England on Friday. We will make an early night of it tonight.
You seem to eat in the World Cafe quite often. Is the restaurant not open or are there special things in the World Cafe you prefer. Just curious. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteWe just like the World Cafe. The waitstaff knows us and takes care of us. The food is excellent. The Restaurant generally takes longer and portions are fixed - we like to take portions that we want - just one scoop of this, half of that, etc. We know plenty of folks that love The Restaurant and eat there regularly, so it isn't that one is better than the other. It is simply a matter of preference. We have had nice meals in The Restaurant as well as Manfredi's and The Chef's Table. The World Cafe fits our culinary taste.
