Caribbean Princess - Day 5 of 7 - St. Kitts and Nevis - fish and more fish

Caribbean Princess cruise - Day 5 of 7

St. Kitts and Nevis

Today, we found ourselves docked in Basseterre on the island of St. Kitts.  Saint Kitts and Nevis is a dual-island nation situated between the Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean Sea. It is known for cloud-shrouded mountains and beaches, at least according to its online description on Google.  We saw both today.

Our excursion today was another snorkeling trip.  You have to give us some slack here.  We just returned from 163 days on The Viking Star that including their World Cruise.  The initial plan, before COVID rearer its ugly head, was to spend a bunch of time in the south Pacific.  We planned on a lot of snorkeling.  That never happened since we reversed course and went around South America, instead.  So, we've been jonesing to do some snorkeling and this cruise fit the bill.

We made the exceptionally long walk from the ship, down the pier, down the continuation walk to the greeting center where we met up with our tour - then, we walked to the next pier to our waiting catamaran

We sailed away from the Caribbean Princess to our one snorkeling stop

The excursion, while fun, was a little transportation heavy and activity light.  The six-hour trip included 40 minutes of snorkeling and about 50 minutes at a beach.  So, six hours, and 4.5 of those hours were sailing and 1.5 hours were doing stuff - the proportions were a little mixed up today.  Regardless, we had fun.  We arrived at Shitten Bay and plunged in.

I tried, but failed, to capture a photo of the tiny jellies that were all over in the water.  They were about the size of a quarter or perhaps half-dollar, but were nearly transparent and impossible to photograph.

The number of fish at our stop was crazy - there were so many

After snorkeling, we were served lunch on the ship.  It included barbequed chicken, salad, beans and rice, mac and cheese, and a sweet potatoes bread dessert.  The last time we were in the islands on a catamaran excursion, we had exactly the same meal.  Some company has certainly figured out an angle here and is working it!

Our ride for the day

After a long cruise, we stopped for just under an hour of beach time on Nevis at Pinneys Beach.

After our 1.5-hour return sail, we arrived back in port, walked through a couple of stores, and headed back to our ship.

We are now on the ship for the duration of the cruise.  The next two days are sea days as we make our way back to Port Everglades.

We opted to hit the buffet again tonight.  We also headed to see the entertainment - a new show by comedian Carlos Oscar.  Once again, we laughed and enjoyed ourselves.

I also want to comment on MedallionNet, Princess's internet package.  While it has had its moments, overall, it has been pretty solid and relatively high-speed.  So for the moment, at least, I can recommend it.  NOTE - as soon as I posted this, the internet started sucking, so...this was a really guarded recommendation.

This is not to be confused with Medallion Class - Princess's proximity system with medallions that sucks, at least on this vessel.  I've heard from others that on newer ships where it was designed-in, it works well.  On older ships like this one, where it was retrofitted, not so much.

I forgot to update the bar watch yesterday - doh!  Someone slammed me for slacking as we aren't hitting bars fast enough!  Truth be told, the bars on the Caribbean Princess aren't all that great.  Most aren't really social bars, and that's more our thing.  So, while we're trying to hit them all, some just aren't great.  Still, we're making the effort.

Bar watch (If the name is red, we have not yet been there.  If it is green, we have sampled their wares.)

  1. Hello Gary, we have been following you since the beginning of the WC, thanks for the fantastic commentary. We are on the Viking WC in January. Those caribbean underwater pictures are very clear. Question to you on your underwater pictures and what's your choice of camera is being used? We need to get something. Thanks

    1. I am using a DJI Osmo Action camera. It is a competitor to the GoPro line. You can go wrong with either one.

Thaks for the kind words. You will enjoy the WC.
