20250131 Seabourn Sojourn Grand Africa Cruise Day 67/96 - Lüderitz, Namibia

Grand Africa Cruise Trip Day 67/96 - Lüderitz, Namibia - Germany in Africa

We awoke to the sounds of bow thrusters as we prepared to dock in Lüderitz, Namibia - our 101st country.

The town is a bit of an oddity as it is a taste of Germany along the southwest coast of Africa.

Lüderitz, sandwiched between the Namib desert and the Atlantic Ocean, is named for Adoph Lüderitz who funded the purchase of the area as a speculative move. Eventually, diamonds were found here, initially simply sitting on the ground. That created a diamond boom. Diamond mining is now gone and they are working on an energy industry including green hydrogen. The German influence from Lüderitz and his cohorts is evident with all the architecture that would look more in place in Germany than in southwest Africa.

Buildings along the waterfront

An original building - Plietz developed the sifter that allowed diamond hunters to sift out diamonds from the dirt

We made a brief stop at the museum

Photos of diamonds found here

The town's namesake

There is a big fishing industry here too

The maritime museum

The museum occupies the former power station

I could almost hear the um-pah band

Haus Grunewald - it sure feels more like Bavaria than Africa

Felsenkirche Evangelical Lutheran Church high upon Diamond Hill

Goerke Haus

You can see how it was built into the hill

We could see the lighthouse on Shark Island in the distance

Saint Paul and Saint Peter Church

Dutch Reformed Church

The Namibia flag and the local police flag

The local prison

We made a stop for a local beer

We walked out to Shark Island, a former prison camp - it is no longer an island and is connected to the town

The lighthouse building - not the actual lighthouse

That's the actual light on the left

Adolph Lüderitz

There were several B&Bs and hotels along the water on Shark Island

Looking back toward town

Coppery mesemb or red ice plant native to this area

We saw this unusually named ship as it sure doesn't look like a "Seaflower"

We returned to the ship and grabbed burgers for lunch. After lunch, we relaxed for the rest of the afternoon. After drinks and dinner, we attended tonight's show - another Liar's Club. They usually do this before dinner, and not as the main entertainment for the night. We're speculating here, but one of the guest singers was not well received a couple of nights back. We're guessing his second show was scheduled for tonight, but they canceled it and replaced it with Liar's Club. It's a guess.

As usual, it was a lot of fun, even if we only guessed two words correctly.

The panel, the corporate cruise director, one of the conversationalists, a guest entertainer, and our new Captain

False speaking; deceitful speech

Having an unfriendly or bad-tempered disposition

A Maltese traditional mode of transport consisting of a carriage pulled by a horse or pair of horses

The day before yesterday

Three teams got all four words correct and faced a tie-breaker.

Overuse or repetition of the word “Hell” in one's speech

Two teams were still tied, so they declared them both the winners. There was a lot of laughter and everyone seemed to enjoy the game.

We returned to the room for the evening. We will arrive in Walvis Bay, Namibia at noon tomorrow for a two-day stay.
