St. Croix, US Virgin Islands

Today, we arrived in St. Croix in the US Virgin Islands.

Specifically, we docked in Frederiksted, the smaller of two ports on St. Croix. Since St. Croix is a US territory, we had cell service which was nice.  We opted not to do a ship excursion and just wandered into the port.

Frederiksted is quite a small port with little shopping available.  The main business open were some restaurants and multiple dive shops.  Our understanding is that scuba diving in St. Croix is terrific, but as non-divers, that was a little lost on us. Oh yeah, chickens.

There are chickens running around all over.  It was a little strange - much like being on Kauai.

There was a beach nearby and we thought we'd wander over there.  As we got off the ship, a frantic woman asked for assistance as her husband had just stepped on a sea urchin at that beach and couldn't walk.  Nice.

We did head over to the beach and just dragged our feet along the shore.  The beach itself was small, and the entrance to the water was quite rocky. There were lounges and umbrellas available for rental, but we opted just for a quick stroll and then returned to the ship.

As we approached the dock, a reporter for the local online newspaper, The St. Croix Source, asked if she could talk to us.  Our ship was the first post-pandemic cruise ship visit into St. Croix so it was kind of a big deal.  The next day, we were featured in the article, photo and all! So yeah, we're kind of internet-famous. You can read the article here.

Unfortunately, as we approached the ship, COVID reared its ugly head.  A passenger tested positive and was being transported off the ship.  The good news is that the tracelets I mentioned yesterday did their job and identified all close contacts.  They were all quarantined briefly and tested and nobody else was infected.  So life continued to sail on.

Back on board meant more pool time, reading, and even a beanbag toss competition.  We spotted turtles swimming beside the ship.  I only had my cell, so the photo isn't great.

This evening's entertainment featured a comedian who was quite funny.

Tomorrow - Antigua.
