20230426 Celebrity Silhouette cruise - Day 7/21 - Village People and not the YMCA kind

Celebrity Silhouette cruise day 7 - Village People

Trip day: 7 / 21

Weather.  It seems we have plenty of it.  54F, 45MPH winds, rain, 12-foot swells - we've got it all here on our third consecutive sea day!  Morning came early again, thanks to last night's change to UTC, otherwise known as Greenwich Mean Time or four hours ahead of time at home on the east coast of the US.

After breakfast, we went to the third progressive trivia.  While we did better today, we had a couple of dumb misses that we slapped ourselves for.

  • What martial art's name means "gentle way"?
    • We thought it was Tai Kwon Do, but it is Judo
  • What creature was the first launched into space by the US?
    • We thought it was a monkey, but it was mice
  • What was the first non-human to win an Oscar?
    • We were thinking of an animal, but it was a cartoon - Mickey Mouse
  • Who was the first democratically elected president in Russia?
    • Boris Yeltsin
  • In what country did Chess originate?
    • We thought it was Russia, but it was India
  • What is the capital of Oregon?
    • We fail US geography as we just couldn't come up with Salem - doh
Today is the day that we/ve set up a meet and greet for residents of The Villages.  We continue to meet Villagers every day so we figured this would be a good time.

Celebrity put it up on the Community Board and also sent voicemail messages to all the Villager's staterooms

I checked with the activity coordinator and she said they reached out to 19 cabins so there are at least 38 Villagers on the Silhouette right now.  We'll see how many show up at 3PM!

At the advice of our daughter, we had been watching the show, Jury Duty on the streaming service, FreeVee.  We watched the first six episodes before we came on this trip.  The final two episodes dropped the day after we sailed, so we figured that we would watch them when we got home.  Since the internet has been so good, I turned on my VPN (so the laptop looked like it was in the US), went to FreeVee, and attempted to stream episode #7.  Much to my surprise, not only did it stream, but it streamed in 1080P high definition.   Wow.  Color me impressed with Starlink.  We watched the final two episodes.  By the way, if you haven't heard of Jury Duty, check it out on Freevee.

At lunch, we caught sight of the first vessel since we departed Bermuda.

At 3 o'clock, we went up to deck 14 and the Connect Room at the Meeting Place.  We were a little underwhelmed at the showing as only seven out of the 38 of us showed up.  Still, we had a great time meeting with neighbors and spent about a half-hour sharing stories.  I still rate it a success and the other Villagers don't know what they missed.

Villagers make up about 2.5% of the passengers on this sailing

With the gathering ending earlier than expected, we were able to make afternoon trivia for another mediocre performance.  The should-have-knowns:

  • Canadian Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, was slammed by the media for singing this song in a hotel, two days before Queen Elizabeth's funeral.
    • Bohemian Rhapsody
  • What social media platform had the most active subscribers in 2022?
    • Facebook
  • Who was the first actress to appear on a postage stamp?
    • Grace Kelly
  • What country has the highest life expectancy?
    • Japan
  • What company was originally called Cadabra?
    • Amazon
  • Who crossed the Alps on elephants on the way to war with the Romans?
    • Hannibal
  • True or false – Halloween originated as an ancient Irish festival?
    • True – who knew?
  • What was Netflix’s most-streamed show in 2021?
    • We thought Ozark – it was Squid Games
  • How many countries still use Shillings as currency?
    • Four – Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Somalia
Tonight was another chic night.  We didn't take any photos, but suffice it to say, we looked marvelous. :-)

After a nice dinner at Blu, we caught magician, Matt McGurk in the theater.

His show was entertaining, featuring a mix of stage illusions and close-up sleight of hand.

Singer Jayne Curry gave another performance tonight – this time in the Grand Foyer.  Once again, she was bouncing floor-to-floor, mesmerizing the throngs of onlookers.  We watched from the Martini Bar and enjoyed the show.

We decided to try our hands at Pub Trivia tonight.  It was basically the same as the other trivia contests.  We did a little better since there were fewer players, but we still managed to screw up some we shouldn’t have.

  • What is the least used color in M&Ms?
    • We debated between blue and brown and guessed blue – it’s brown
  • Carrots are a good source of this vitamin
    • We thought “K” – it’s “A”
  • Who wrote Dr. Zhivago?
    • Boris Pasternak
  • Which Hollywood actress has been on the cover of Life Magazine the most?
    • We guessed Doris Day – it was Elizabeth Taylor
  • What is the brightest star in the night sky?
    • Sirius
We still scored enough to get rewarded with a stylish Celebrity Pop Socket phone grip.  Life changing. :-)

The Martini Bar was hopping with no seats available.  We decided to call it an early evening.

The sky was a little deceiving.  Here’s a look at the current winds.

Our position is roughly where the flag is pinned and you can see we’ve got 25MPH winds. We’re just south of much heavier winds.  There is a stationary low-pressure system to our southeast that is mucking up the weather here.  It looks like it’s planning to stick around at least until we reach Ireland.  Boo!

We grabbed a couple Sprite Zeros and headed back to the room.  We lose another hour tonight to get to UTC+1 – five hours ahead of the east coast of the US and onto Ireland time.

Perhaps, we’ll stream this week’s Ted Lasso!
