Grand Africa Cruise Trip Day 17/96 - Sea Day activities a promise of Christmas, and malaria mitigation
As promised, Santa's elves descended upon the ship overnight and we awoke to changes all over the ship.
|
Even the fifth-floor mascot, Teckel, was dressed up |
|
We could see lights strung along the main staircase |
Before our day began, we started a new phase in our travel - anti-malaria medication.
We are moving into the part of the journey where we will be spending all our time in mainland Africa. According to the Centers for Disease Control's Yellow Book, here is a map of the areas in Africa where malaria is endemic.
|
The recommendation is to start taking the meds two days before potential exposure and keep taking them until a week after final exposure - we'll be on the meds for the next nearly three months |
Our sea day activities started with Baggo - officers versus guests. It was different than regular Baggo and was a lot of fun with the officers and guests competing against each other.
Today, Arlona's art projects included wooden beaded earrings and a bracelet.
|
They turned out great |
Trivia today was rough once again. - What is the longest-running Broadway play?
- We guessed Cats, but it is Phantom of the Opera
- What Central American country's name means Many Fish in another language?
- We guessed Guatemala - it was Panama
- Who was the Greek goddess of victory?
- We guessed Athena - it was Nike
- What Paris landmark is Mile Zero - the center of the city?
- We guessed the Arc de Triomphe - it was Notre Dame
The bonus today was identifying movies by a famous quote from that movie. We missed:
- Look at me. I'm the captain now.
- Coffee is for closers, only!
- Two of us knew the movie but couldn't come up with the name - Glengarry, Glen Ross
We had a port briefing about the next two ports after Ivory Coast - Ghana. Then, I took a walk around, capturing all the decorations around the ship.
|
Seabourn thoughtfully provided headwear for everyone |
|
It was a formal night in The Restaurant so the officers were all in class A uniforms |
|
The Seabourn entertainers lead the caroling |
|
The atrium was packed |
|
The tree lights shut off at one point - we suspect the green guy had something to do with it |
|
A guest choir performed a couple of songs |
|
The tree and the entire stairwell were nicely lit |
|
The lights wrap all the way down from Deck #9 to Deck #4 |
We enjoyed a pre-dinner cocktail in the Observation Bar. Arlona caught some nice views as the sun sunk into the horizon haze.
We ate dinner at Earth and Ocean tonight. It was a lovely evening to dine outside. They had a terrific cowboy bone-in ribeye that we both enjoyed immensely.
We decided tonight would be another Christmas movie night, this time with Fred Claus. On the way back to the suite, we ran into our Cruise Director, Nick, who is always on the run.
With that, our day wrapped up. Tomorrow is our last sea day of this stretch and a big day, but you'll have to return tomorrow for the details.
